Into The Future
Is It Likely That This Type Of Disaster Will Occur Again In The Same Location?
In my opinion, I think it is very likely that Mt Vesuvius will erupt again. I think that it is very likely because Mt Vesuvius is located right near the cross section of two fault lines, it is still active and it hasn’t erupted in 71 years. Mt Vesuvius is located in a subduction zone. The Bay of Naples has oceanic crust and continental crust so if they converge, subduction is likely to occur, causing the volcano to erupt again. Mt Vesuvius is also located right near a cross section of fault lines of the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate. This can mean regular Earthquakes and an off chance volcanic eruption. Mt Vesuvius is still an active volcano, so there is definitely a chance that it will erupt again. There is frequent smoke seen coming off of it. Mt Vesuvius’ last eruption was in 1944, and before that is was in 1906, so it is overdue for an eruption.
What Roles Do Scientists Have In Preventing This Type Of Disaster?
A scientist who detects volcanoes is called a Volcanologist. Being a Volcanologist is a very hard job. Detecting a volcano before an eruption is very difficult because the signs are not always clear before the actual eruption. Using a seismometers can be helpful in detecting the earthquake before the eruption and pin pointing the rise of magma to the volcanoes crater. Volcanologists can also measure the tilt of the mountains slope to measure the breathing like motions of the volcano with the magma inside it. A mixture of these two methods is the most reliable way to predict the eruption of a volcano.
What Types of Actions Can People Take to Minimize Loss of Life?
Many actions can be taken to minimize the loss of life during a volcanic eruption. Living away from the mountain is probably one of the most effective and more obvious ones. In the Bay of Naples, people live right on the slope of the mountain for the rich mineral soil. This is very dangerous if there was to be an eruption, as everything would be destroyed and if people couldn’t get out in tie, they would die. So if people don’t live close to the mountain, there chance of death is less likely. Educating people about the dangers of volcanoes. For example in the US; they have school education programs where they teach people how to spot a volcano about to erupt, how to get out with their life and how to help others when and if an eruption occurs. These include having a place to stay outside of town if you live near a volcano, collecting important belongings, notifying neighbours and friends in the same area about the signs and having insurance to protect you and your family from the worst.
